If you’re a YouTube TV subscriber, your monthly bill is about to increase once again.
Alphabet-owned YouTube is raising the price of its popular TV streaming service, which has more than 8 million subscribers. Starting in January, the cost of the platform will increase from $72.99 to $82.99 per month.
YouTube TV’s latest price increase stems from rising content costs, the company said.
“We don’t make these decisions lightly, and we understand that this impacts our members. We are committed to bringing you features that change the way we watch live TV,” YouTube TV said in an email to subscribers on Thursday. .
The price increase will be reflected in members’ first billing cycle after January 13. Subscribers can check which plan they are subscribing to by checking their account membership settings.
YouTube acknowledged that some viewers might abandon their subscriptions due to the price hike and reminded customers that they could do so at any time.
YouTube is following the lead of other major streaming services in raising prices for consumers this year. In August, Disney increased the price of its Disney+ services with and without advertising by $2. An ad-supported subscription costs $9.99, while the ad-free version costs $15.99 per month. It also increased the price of its Hulu + Live TV package.
Apple TV+, Disney+ and Paramount+ have also raised prices, offered new service levels or cracked down on password sharing (CBS News is owned by Paramount Global, which offers the Paramount+ streaming service.)
And more and more streamers are also resorting to bundling deals to get in on the action live. YouTube TV’s new $82.99 price is the same as what was announced for Disney’s Hulu + Live TV bundle.
YouTube TV has increased its price several times since its launch in 2017, when a subscription cost $35 per month. In 2019, the monthly cost was $50. YouTube last increased fees in March 2023 to $72.99.
